Drawing on her extensive expertise in gender-based violence and advocacy for marginalised women, Catherine Njenga is a passionate and visionary leader dedicated to empowering women, with a particular focus on Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women affected by domestic abuse and mental health challenges. As the CEO and Founder of Amani Women’s Empowerment and Support Organisation (AWESO), she is committed to empowering vulnerable women and promoting equality within underserved communities. Catherine brings a unique blend of professional expertise and a lived understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, having worked with survivors of domestic abuse for over a decade. Her background in advocacy, social care, safeguarding and counselling allows her to navigate the complexities of issues facing at-risk populations. As a qualified counsellor, she holds an MA in Counselling (Integrative Counselling) and a B.Sc. in Psychology. Combining academic knowledge, with years of direct experience working with vulnerable women, has enabled Catherine to develop trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches that provide effective support to survivors and those at risk of domestic abuse.
Additionally, her work extends to advocating for systemic change aimed at removing barriers that prevent marginalised women from accessing crucial resources and support. Her commitment to creating safe spaces and nurturing environments where women can heal, grow, thrive and reclaim their agency is at the core of her leadership. Through her work, she strives to amplify the voices of marginalised women, dismantle societal barriers, and inspire sustainable change within communities. Catherine’s vision is a world where every woman regardless of background feels valued, supported, and empowered to realise her fullest potential and live free from abuse and fear.

Amani Women’s Empowerment & Support Organisation (AWESO) is a specialist organisation, committed to empowering, supporting, and advocating for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women survivors of, or at risk of domestic abuse. Based in the UK and led by and for Black, Asian, and minoritised women, AWESO is dedicated to providing holistic, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed domestic abuse services to women from BAME communities.
