Amani Women’s Empowerment & Support Organisation (AWESO) is a specialist organisation, committed to empowering, supporting, and advocating for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women survivors of, or at risk of domestic abuse. Based in the UK and led by and for Black, Asian, and minoritised women, AWESO is dedicated to providing holistic, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed domestic abuse services to women from BAME communities.
Our mission is to offer holistic tailored support that empowers, uplifts, and advocates for BAME women, addressing their unique needs within Psychologically Informed Environments.
Our Vision
Domestic abuse is defined as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer.
Domestic abuse is a pervasive issue that affects women across all communities. However, Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) women in the UK face unique challenges when it comes to experiencing and seeking help for domestic abuse. These challenges include cultural, social, and systemic barriers that can make it harder for BAME women to seek help, access support, and break free from abusive situations.
At AWESO, we understand that domestic abuse affects women in many different ways, and the challenges faced by BAME women can be compounded by cultural, societal, and community factors. We are therefore dedicated to empowering and supporting BAME women who have survived or at risk of domestic abuse. We offer a wide range of services tailored to address the distinct challenges faced by BAME women. Our approach is grounded in trauma-informed care, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to delivering emotional and support within a Psychologically Informed Environment, ensuring that the unique needs of each woman are respected and upheld.
Since 2020, we’ve been on a mission to end domestic abuse in the BAME community.
We believe in a world where every woman, regardless of her background, deserves to live a life free from abuse and fear, join us in addressing the unique needs of BAME women.
